"Onekahakaha" 2004 Acrylic 16 x 20" My love of wild and distant places is evident here in this rugged Big Island coastal scene. My brush and hand go every which way in a profusion of marks that in themselves embody the pace and energy of the life I see before me. Once again, I am greatly concerned with balancing the three primary colors of red, yellow and blue. I utilize the emotional qualities of each primary color to interpret the elemental forces in nature. The warmth of the tropical atmosphere can only be captured with highly developed red and yellow areas. All that red must then be balanced out by not so much green as blue and yellow in energetic, loose strokes. The strength of the pure yellow is modified by many varieties of that color set side by side with the white and grays. This is a good tip when you want to use yellow like I do. I was able to get a tremendous depth in this painting as a result of the surface treatment, the texture. The manner and size in which the strokes stand out are suggestive of forms close-up and far away. The painting's focus moves to the distant horizon as a result of this special attention to the texture.
